Detlef joined the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) in 2017 where his research within Secan-Lab focuses on IoT and 5G. With a career spanning nearly thirty years in the domains communication technologies and microelectronics, Detlef has worked at companies including Hitachi Electronic Components in Munich and Tokyo, Texas Instruments Europe, and Alcatel Microelectronics (AME). From 2008 to 2017, he was an Adviser at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) where he led the technical and scientific support for the development of European Radio Spectrum Policies. His numerous publications on spectrum sharing and wireless coexistence as well as on market and technology assessments, include the first German-language expert book on ADSL. Throughout his career he also oversaw the developments of numerous prototypes/proof-of-concept designs, including a couple of industry “firsts”, such as the 1st MCU-less feature phone, the world’s smallest USB ADSL modem, the 1st 2-chip ADSL Set Top Box, and the 1st Smart Wi-Fi Access Point with certified auto-location and dynamic band avoidance.
His primary research interests lie in spectrum sharing mechanisms, the effects of intentional and non-intentional interference on wireless system QoS/QoE and innovative spectrum monitoring concepts and methods, as well as 5G applications for the tactile Internet.
