A survey on linear cryptanalysis using multiple linear approximations

Abstract
Recently, various authors have presented different approaches to using multiple linear approximations. Some are based on the assumption that the approximations are statistically independent, while some others use multidimensional distributions without such an assumption. Some authors tune their method for block ciphers, and take the Markov cipher view on them, and some other analyze stream ciphers. Some do distinguishing attacks only, some aim at recovery of bits of the key. Also different authors use different statistics, and statistical inference is based on different hypothesis tests. By bringing different approaches together this survey aims towards developing a unified framework for multidimensional linear cryptanalysis.
