A Security Architecture for Body Area Networks

abstract
Body Area Networks (BAN) applications offer an interesting and challenging environment when it comes to designing a cost-effective security architecture. Stringent constraints means that it is usually impracticable to reuse standard protocols and cryptographic algorithms. Moreover BAN systems are usually compound of many heterogeneous devices with different processing power. Hence, making adequate trade-offs and exploiting all available resources are a must.

In the first part of this presentation, we propose a lightweight security architecture for BAN that best fits the security requirements of the targeted application. A small MAC function is proposed, along with 2 possible way of extensions. The security of the MAC function is analysed.

In the second part we give some ideas on how to speed-up the finding of collision trails with minimum cost.
