IPv6 - The New Internet and What it Means to You

Date: Tuesday 29th January 2008

The existing IP version 4 (IPv4), contains just over four billion unique IP addresses, which is not enough to last indefinitely. IPv6 is a replacement for IPv4, offering far more IP addresses and enhanced security features. ARIN and the other RIR's have distributed IPv6 alongside IPv4 since 1999. So far, ARIN has issued both versions in tandem and has not advocated one over the other, though it has closely monitored distribution trends with the understanding that the IPv4 available resource pool would continue to diminish.

With only 19% of IPv4 address space remaining; however, it is now compelled to advise the Internet community that migration to IPv6 is necessary for any applications that require ongoing availability of contiguous IP number resources.

Second successful u-2010 Demonstration in Slovakia

Date: Monday 26/11/2007
Location: Stredisko vzdelavania a pripravy na CO - Levicka 15, Nitra - Slovakia, Civil Protection training object

Crisis situation: Translating one of the scenarios from WP1 of U2010 project into practice; some suspect materials are discovered in the vicinity of a nuclear installation, which pose a potential threat of radioactivity. There is also a suspicion that this may be a terrorist attack.

Tasks: Launch the alarm, take radioactivity measurements of the suspected material, transmit the data to the laboratory and the central office of the Civil Protection. Send all available protection teams to the disaster area using ubiquitous IP communication.

The demonstration showed:

  • Ubiquitous network connections,
  • Mobility features,
  • Extended security,
  • Full IP based communication,
  • IPv6 communication protocol,
  • Communication without borders,
  • Enhanced alarm system.

ARIN Board Advises Internet Community on Migration to IPv6
Posted: Mon, 21 May 2007

ARIN and the other Regional Internet Registries have distributed Internet Protocol version 6, IPv6, alongside IPv4 since 1999. To date, ARIN has issued both protocol versions in tandem and has not advocated one over the other. ARIN has closely monitored trends in demand and distribution for both protocol versions with the understanding that the IPv4 available resource pool would continue to diminish.

The available IPv4 resource pool has now been reduced to the point that ARIN is compelled to advise the Internet community that migration to IPv6 is necessary for any applications that require ongoing availability from ARIN of contiguous IP number resources.

On 7 May 2007, the ARIN Board of Trustees passed the following resolution:

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF ARIN ON INTERNET PROTOCOL NUMBERING RESOURCE AVAILABILITY

WHEREAS, community access to Internet Protocol (IP) numbering Resources has proved essential to the successful growth of the Internet; and,

WHEREAS, ongoing community access to Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) numbering resources can not be assured indefinitely; and,

WHEREAS, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) numbering resources are available and suitable for many Internet applications,

BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board of Trustees hereby advises the Internet community that migration to IPv6 numbering resources is necessary for any applications which require ongoing availability from ARIN of contiguous IP numbering resources; and,

BE IT ORDERED, that this Board of Trustees hereby directs ARIN staff to take any and all measures necessary to assure veracity of applications to ARIN for IPv4 numbering resources; and,

BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board of Trustees hereby requests the ARIN Advisory Council to consider Internet Numbering Resource Policy changes advisable to encourage migration to IPv6 numbering resources where possible.

Implementation of this resolution will include both internal and external components. Internally, ARIN will review its resource request procedures and continue to provide policy experience reports to the Advisory Council. Externally, ARIN will send progress announcements to the ARIN community as well as the wider technical audience, government agencies, and media outlets. ARIN will produce new documentation, from basic introductory fact sheets to FAQs on how this resolution will affect users in the region. ARIN will focus on IPv6 in many of its general outreach activities, such as speaking engagements, trade shows, and technical community meetings.

u-2010 presentation at the Department of Civil Protection in Slovakia

On 12/01/2007 Korak Slovakia presented the u-2010 project to the Department of Civil Protection, which is part of the Ministry of Interior.

The presentation took place in the building of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic. The participants were:

  • Ing. Jan Repa - Director of Office of Civil Protection
  • Ing. Daniel Kralik - Director of Common Department of Office of Civil Protection
  • Ing. Peter Zahradnik - General Manager of Protection Critical Infrastructure and Automatic Information Systems Department of the Ministry of Interior
  • Ing. Aurel Machalek, u-2010 Project Manager for Korak Slovakia

The main topics discussed were the status of the u-2010 project and the current status of Work Packages 1 and 2. The office of Civil Protection has an interest in working together with the u-2010 project, especially where it concerns dissemination, as this will assist them in defining their view of, and their requirements for, a critical infrastructure. The office of Civil Department will open their data infrastructure (called CONET) to u-2010 project research and will help with their own staff.

Mr. Jan Repa illustrated his point of view concering the results of related projects and stated his personal wish to implement parts of the results of the u-2010 which fit to the needs of the office of Civil Protection. It may also be possible that Korak Slovakia, together with the office of Civil Protection, may be able to work together with the Civil Protection Department in Slovenia. This is made possible by the good relationship that exists between the Slovakian and the Slovenian Civil Protectiom Departments.
